To hail the coming vernal bloom,
How emerald these isles become!
And yet one song remains undone;
Eternal words, forgotten, loom.

My striving soul has been subdued,
Its crooked flight has frozen still;  
Some secret it could not distill, 
Some visions it could not construe. 

Now envy-ridden and distraught, 
It sees the melted snow agleam,
While rivers flow in strident stream,
And there will its new shores be sought.
